THE SLIDE

Coconut Island... a colourful, soft play world with painted monkeys and adventures at every turn. My little boy adores it. He loves the climbing, the bravery needed for the dark-room painted with fluorescent spiders, the tall tower and the 3 slides.

There is a huge yellow slide, its straight-slope mastered first. Then there is a curling green and yellow slide requiring more bravery, its twists making the descent unknown. This was the second slide mastered.

And then there is the red and yellow one with its entrance too much of a balance, its descent too steep, its twist too foreboding, also shrouding the journey down in mystery. This slide has taunted my little boy for some time now and try as he might he just couldn't muster up the courage.

He would however sit at the bottom,  gazing longingly and throwing balls up into its laughing mouth. But then with no warning, this week he turned from his place at the bottom and as he did I saw determination in his eyes.

In silence he walked straight past me and was gone, only to appear, seconds later in a flurry of excitement from out of the slides mouth!

He looked more surprised than I did and it was wonderful!

He laughed at my hysterical cheering and clapping. He laughed at my beaming, oh so proud grin. He laughed at his own ability to be braver than he ever thought possible.

He climbed out of the conquered slide still grinning and looked around him as if the world was suddenly a new place... a 3 slide place!

He breathed it in, he was still for a fleeting moment and then he raised his arms and he celebrated as only a 2 year old boy who has conquered a red and yellow slide nemesis can!

Busby Bill, my champion, I love you to the moon and back always. xxxx
